New Coastal Hazards Resources

Community Coastal Hazards Education - Website and StoryMap

The Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) is excited to announce the release of a new website and StoryMap that offer educational materials and other resources relating to coastal hazards in the western Upper Peninsula. These websites serve to inform the community of the coastal hazards along Lake Superior by offering tools for homeowners and educators, ways to get involved, an emergency services FAQ, and an interactive StoryMap experience. A StoryMap is an interactive webpage that combines maps, photos, videos, and other media into one comprehensive platform. It is framed in context of the region with supporting information, so it becomes a stand-alone resource.

Throughout 2022, the project facilitated four workshops on coastal hazards in the western Upper Peninsula in partnership with local organizations, including the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative, Keweenaw Land Trust, and regional emergency services. The workshops delivered information and mitigation strategies on coastal risks of Lake Superior. Two of these workshops, focusing on shoreline flooding and water safety, were developed for educators to use in the classrooms and can be found in the educator resource section of the website. The other two workshops were for the general public and discussed shoreline erosion, and disaster planning and response.

The website and link to the StoryMap are available at www.wupcoastalhazards.org and also accessible through www.wuppdr.org. The StoryMap can also be directly linked to at www.tinyurl.com/wupstorymap.

This project was funded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Michigan Coastal Management Program, Water Resources Division, Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
